Ocella Side Effects

Ocella, the generic form of Yaz and Yasmin, is a fourth generation birth control which uses a combination of the progestin drospirenone  and ethinyl estradiol to help prevent women from getting pregnant.  It is also prescribed to help treat mild cases of acne and to aid with symptoms of  premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Ocella  is distributed and manufactured by Barr Pharmaceuticals.  Yaz/Yasmin and the generic form of the drug, Ocella are the most popular forms of  drospirenone based prescription birth control in the United States.

Just like Yasmin and Yaz, Ocella’s main components are ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone, which, when combined,  prevent  pregnancy by altering the lining of the uterus and the cervix. This  makes it difficult for the sperm to reach the eggs and for the fertilized eggs to attach to the uterus.

However, like Yasmin and Yaz, Ocella has been reported to be the cause of  serious side effects which could be fatal or cause permanent damage. Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella are the only forms of oral birth control which contain drospirenone, which can increse potassium levels in the bloodstream.  This increase in potassium could lead to serious side effects  in women such as Pulmonary Emboli, Gallbladder Disease, Deep Vein Thrombosis, and sudden death.

Ocella is not recommended for women who have pre-existing kidney, liver, or adrenal diseases because they may be more susceptible to the increased levels of potassium in the bloodstream.  It is also not recommended for women who have  medical histories that  include, high blood pressure, prior strokes, prior heart attacks, depression,  unusual menstrual cycle or the vaginal bleeding, and certain types of cancers.

Women who become pregnant need to stop taking Ocella becasue Ocella and similar birth controls could cause  serious birth defects. Women who  use  Ocella should maintain a healthy lifestyle them to avoide suffering from the more serious effects of this drug. Alcohol and tobacco should completely be avoided when  taking Ocella, along with any type of prescription medications that would not be passed by the medical experts.
