The NuvaRing would be the vinyl polyethylene acetate ring that is about 2 inches around. It would be worn in your vagina for about three weeks and after that would be removed for about one week. This ring would contain a combination of hormones such as progestin and estrogen. The NuvaRing slowly releases these hormones into your bloodstream. The progestin would be absorbed and then it would prevent your ovaries from releasing the eggs. In addition, your uterine lining would become thinner and your cervical mucous would become thicker. The NuvaRing has been considered the third-generation contraceptive.

The oral contraceptives normally are made up of the mixture of the synthetic female hormones. The first-gen pills, had first been introduced back in the 60’s, they had the high levels of estrogen and norethisterone or progestogens lynestrenol hormones. These early birth control pills had caused high number in people who had the blood clots that had resulted in the blockages in woman’s brains, hearts and legs. The blockages could then lead to the strokes and heart attacks.

The second generation pills had been formulated to lower the risks of the blood clots. They had contained the lower amounts of the estrogen and a completely different progestogen that is called levonorgestrel. Their downside to the second generation pills were that they had caused the side effects like, hirsutism, acne, raised cholesterol levels and great weight gains. The third and the second generation contraceptives would differ in the progestin components.

Now for the third gen birth control pills like the NuvaRing, they had been developed back in the 80’s. They had contained the progestogen hormones gestodene or desogestrel. Their goal was to reduce the adverse effects like the acne and the hirsutism. It’s estimated that about 7,500,000 women have filled the prescriptions for the third generation contraceptives right here in the US just in 06 alone. Studies found out that the women that have been using the third-generation contraceptive have the increased risks of blood clots compared to the women that would be using the second-generation contraceptive that contains the levonorgestrel.

Some of the researchers have been questioning whether or not the third-generation contraceptive like NuvaRing would be safer and more effective than the second-generation contraceptive since they would be having the blood clots risks. They focus on the desogestrel, which would be a synthetic form of progestin. Desogestrel would appear to be causing the resistance to Protein C. When the coagulation would be inhibited it would make it much easier for the blood clots to start to form which is going to increases the risks of the venous thrombosis.
