Nuvaring Blood Clots Lawsuit

Many women have been reported the Nuvaring blood clots once they have been using the birth contraceptive rings. The NuvaRing birth control would be the combination hormonal contraceptive. The manufacturer is Organon USA. The NuvaRing is the polyethylene vinyl acetate ring that is around 2″ in diameter. It would be worn in a vagina for about 3 weeks, and then removed from the vagina for 1 week. This ring contains the combination of hormones that would be progestin and estrogen. The NuvaRing would slowly release these hormones into your bloodstream. Progestin is then absorbed and prevents your ovary from releasing the eggs. In addition, your uterine lining will become much thinner along with the cervical mucus becoming thicker. The NuvaRing would be considered the third generation of contraceptive.
Oral contraceptives normally are made from mixing the synthetic female hormones. This would be the first generation of the birth controls, and had first been introduced back in the 60’s, they had very high levels of hormones lunestrenol and estrogen or even norethisterone. The early pills had caused high number in blood clots that would be resulting in blockages that would be in woman’s legs, brains, and hearts. The blockage would then lead to strokes and heart attacks.
The second generation pills had been formulated to lower the risks of the blood clots. They had contained the lower amounts of the estrogen along with using levonorgestrel. Their downside was, they had caused many side effects like acne, weight gain, hirsutism (the increase of hair growth), along with higher cholesterol levels. The third and second generation oral contraceptive would differ in the progestin components.
The third generation birth control like the NuvaRing had been developed back in the 80’s to contain progestogen hormones gestodene or desogestrel. Their goal had been to help reduce the adverse effects like acne and hirsutism. It was estimated that about 7,500,000 women had filled their prescriptions for the third generation contraceptives in the U.S in 2006. Many studies had found women using the third generation contraceptives had the increased risks of venous thromboembolism, which is blood clots, compared to those who use the second generation contraceptives that would be containing the levonorgestrel.
Some of the researchers have been questioning whether the third generation contraceptives, like the NuvaRing would be safer and more effective than the second generation contraceptives, given the risks of blood clots being increased. The focus had been on the desogestrel, this is the synthetic form of progestin. Desogestrel causes resistance to anti-coagulant proteins, which would be protein C. When the coagulation would be inhibited, it would make it much easier for the blood clots to be forming, which will increase the risks of venous thrombosis.
