Avandia Recall Lawsuit - GlaxoSmithKline To Pay $460 Million

There has not been a recall as of July 12th, 2010 on Avandia. Maker of the popular Diabetes drug Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, agreed to pay about $460 million to resolve approximately $10,000 lawsuits regarding injuries from Avandia heart attacks and strokes. This news comes as the FDA is in the middle of a meeting to determine the future of the drug and vote on whether there should be an Avandia recall.

GlaxoSmithKline has been relying on a study they performed known as RECORD which reportedly found no increased risk of heart issues with Avandia. An FDA report released recently, however, strongly criticized this study saying that it was “inappropriate and biased.” The panel of experts will be looking at information like this and attempting to decide if Avandia is or is not safe and what kind of action needs to be taken.

Dr. Steve Nissen, author of a study which found an increased risk for heart attacks in Avandia patients, had this to say about Avandia’s popularity: “We didn’t have all the information. Even the FDA didn’t have all the information. We made a terrible mistake in approving this drug, and tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people have been harmed.”
