FDA finds Avandia Increases Heart Risks—Data Hidden from Public

Many patients and their loved ones are now wondering if their heart attacks, heart failures, or strokes may have been caused by their use of Avandia.

The popular diabetes drug, Avandia, recently went on trial in front of a panel of outside experts who were charged with helping the FDA evaluate the safety risks associated with the drug. According to The Washington Post, the panel voted 21-4 that there was “sufficient evidence to be concerned that Avandia increased the risks for heart attacks and strokes.”

New information has become available that Avandia’s maker GlaxoSmithKline tried to ignore these risks associated with Avandia and attempted to hide them from the public. According to a report by the New York Times, in 1999 GlaxoSmithKline conducted an internal study of Avandia to see how it compared to another popular Diabetes pill, Actos. The results of this study showed that Avandia raised the risk of heart attacks and heart failure and was riskier than Actos.

A GlaxoSmithKline executive wrote of these results in an internal e-mail message dated March 29, 2001, “These data should not see the light of day to anyone outside of GSK.”

These data, however, have now become available to the public and have raised concern amongst patients taking Avandia.
