FDA Panel Votes: Avandia Increases Heart Risks
July 24, 2010
A panel of 33 experts meeting today with the FDA to discuss the health issues and risks associated with Avandia has taken the first of several important votes. According to The Washington Post, the panel voted 21-4 that there was “sufficient evidence to be concerned that Avandia increased the risks for heart attacks and strokes.” (8 panelists said they did not have enough information to make a decision).
While the committee agreed that Avandia increased the risk of heart attacks, it did not agree that Avandia increased the risk for death. The most crucial vote left is expected to come later today when the panel will decide whether or not Avandia should remain on the market.
While the FDA does not have to follow the advice of the expert panel, it most often does so. The final decision about the future of a potential Avandia Recall will be made by the current FDA Commissioner at the conclusion of the expert testimonies and votes.
