FDA Panel Votes: Bad News for Avandia
July 24, 2010
A panel of 33 experts meeting today with the FDA to discuss the health issues and risks associated with Avandia has taken its final vote and the results are in.
According to The New York Times, 12 panel members voted to withdraw Avandia from the market completely, 10 voted that it should continue to be sold but with strong restrictions on its sale and revisions to its label, 7 voted to add more warnings, 3 voted to change nothing, and 1 member abstained from voting.
The results of this vote, while not definitive, are not good news for Avandia’s maker GlaxoSmithKline. Many of the members who voted for strong restrictions and warnings said that they almost voted for complete withdrawal but were held back because they felt they needed more evidence to make that determination.
While the FDA does not have to follow the advice of the expert panel, it most often does so. The final decision about the future of a potential Avandia Recall will be made by the current FDA Commissioner at a later date.
