FDA Bans New Patients from Joining Avandia Safety Study

August 4, 2010 by US Drug Recall

The FDA, according to ABC News, recently ordered GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturers of the controversial diabetes drug, Avandia, to stop adding new patients to its trial comparing Avandia and another diabetes drug, Actos. It is assumed that this decision is the result of a recent vote by an expert panel which recommended stricter regulation and warnings for Avandia.

The FDA requested the drug study comparing Avandia and Actos in 2007 after a previous vote on Avandia’s safety. Dr. David Graham, author of a study on Avandia’s dangerous side effects has said that the trial is “unethical and exploitative,” because it is set up to look for Avandia’s safety problems.

Avandia has been under heavy criticism lately with several recent medical studies claiming that it increases the risk for heart attacks and heart failure. Also recently, an FDA appointed advisory panel voted to add more substantial warnings to Avandia’s label and more regulations as to who can and cannot take the drug.

Those who have taken the popular diabetes drug Avandia to control their Type II diabetes may be wondering exactly what the safety concerns are. While Avandia is a widely prescribed and useful diabetes drug, recent studies have shown that this medication also has a number of unexpected and potentially fatal side effects.

The side effects caused by the use of Avandia include:

  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Sudden Death

One of the most serious potential side effects for user of Avandia is a substantially increased risk of suffering a heart attack. In fact, recent studies have estimated that people taking Avandia are 33 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack than those taking other Diabetes medications.

Dangerous Avandia Side Effects: Heart Attacks and Stroke

Avandia is a drug commonly prescribed for patients with Type II diabetes. It works by making patients’ bodies more sensitive to their own insulin. It was approved for use by the FDA in 1999 and quickly became very popular. In 2006, Avandia sales were approximately $3.4 billion in 200, however sales dropped off in 2007 when the first concerns about its potential heart risks were made public. Since then, Avandia has still been widely prescribed, but recently, with more studies linking Avandia to increased Heart Attack and Stroke risks, doctors and patients have more worries about Avandia.

In July 2010, an FDA advisory panel suggested that the FDA add more warnings and restrictions to Avandia which might mean that patients would have to apply for special permission from their doctors to use the drug. It is thought that, even if the drug is not recalled, sales will still drop and it will become much less popular.

Avandia has many different side effects, but some of the most serious and sometimes fatal are Heart Attack, Congestive Heart Failure, and Stroke. In several studies it has been shown that Avandia increases the risk for all three of these problems, in comparison to other diabetes drugs. People taking Avandia who have experienced these health issues may be entitled to a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline (the makers of the drug.)

FDA finds Avandia Increases Heart Risks—Data Hidden from Public

Many patients and their loved ones are now wondering if their heart attacks, heart failures, or strokes may have been caused by their use of Avandia.

The popular diabetes drug, Avandia, recently went on trial in front of a panel of outside experts who were charged with helping the FDA evaluate the safety risks associated with the drug. According to The Washington Post, the panel voted 21-4 that there was “sufficient evidence to be concerned that Avandia increased the risks for heart attacks and strokes.”

New information has become available that Avandia’s maker GlaxoSmithKline tried to ignore these risks associated with Avandia and attempted to hide them from the public. According to a report by the New York Times, in 1999 GlaxoSmithKline conducted an internal study of Avandia to see how it compared to another popular Diabetes pill, Actos. The results of this study showed that Avandia raised the risk of heart attacks and heart failure and was riskier than Actos.

A GlaxoSmithKline executive wrote of these results in an internal e-mail message dated March 29, 2001, “These data should not see the light of day to anyone outside of GSK.”

These data, however, have now become available to the public and have raised concern amongst patients taking Avandia.

GlaxoSmithKline, makers of the widely used diabetes drug, Avandia, are being forced to come face to face with the consequences of this drug’s side effects as many users of Avandia are currently filing lawsuits against the company. Recent studies have shown that Avandia, when compared with other diabetes medications, increases the patient’s risk for some potentially fatal side effects. Some of the most serious side effects which have been reported by these studies are Heart Attack, Heart failure, and Stroke. It has also recently come to light that GlaxoSmithKline knew that Avandia was risky and attempted to hide that fact from the FDA and from the public.

If you or a loved one has taken Avandia and suffered from a Heart Attack, Congestive Heart Failure, or Stroke, you may be eligible to join many others in filing a lawsuit against GlaxoSmithKline. This lawsuit will not negatively affect your doctors or other medical healthcare providers and will not cost you or your family anything. FDA Panel Votes: Avandia Increases Heart Risks

A panel of 33 experts meeting today with the FDA to discuss the health issues and risks associated with Avandia has taken the first of several important votes. According to The Washington Post, the panel voted 21-4 that there was “sufficient evidence to be concerned that Avandia increased the risks for heart attacks and strokes.” (8 panelists said they did not have enough information to make a decision).

While the committee agreed that Avandia increased the risk of heart attacks, it did not agree that Avandia increased the risk for death. The most crucial vote left is expected to come later today when the panel will decide whether or not Avandia should remain on the market.

While the FDA does not have to follow the advice of the expert panel, it most often does so. The final decision about the future of a potential Avandia Recall will be made by the current FDA Commissioner at the conclusion of the expert testimonies and votes.

FDA Panel Votes: Bad News for Avandia

A panel of 33 experts meeting today with the FDA to discuss the health issues and risks associated with Avandia has taken its final vote and the results are in.

According to The New York Times, 12 panel members voted to withdraw Avandia from the market completely, 10 voted that it should continue to be sold but with strong restrictions on its sale and revisions to its label, 7 voted to add more warnings, 3 voted to change nothing, and 1 member abstained from voting.

The results of this vote, while not definitive, are not good news for Avandia’s maker GlaxoSmithKline. Many of the members who voted for strong restrictions and warnings said that they almost voted for complete withdrawal but were held back because they felt they needed more evidence to make that determination.

While the FDA does not have to follow the advice of the expert panel, it most often does so. The final decision about the future of a potential Avandia Recall will be made by the current FDA Commissioner at a later date.

Avandia Recall Lawsuit - GlaxoSmithKline To Pay $460 Million

July 13, 2010 by US Drug Recall

There has not been a recall as of July 12th, 2010 on Avandia. Maker of the popular Diabetes drug Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, agreed to pay about $460 million to resolve approximately $10,000 lawsuits regarding injuries from Avandia heart attacks and strokes. This news comes as the FDA is in the middle of a meeting to determine the future of the drug and vote on whether there should be an Avandia recall.

GlaxoSmithKline has been relying on a study they performed known as RECORD which reportedly found no increased risk of heart issues with Avandia. An FDA report released recently, however, strongly criticized this study saying that it was “inappropriate and biased.” The panel of experts will be looking at information like this and attempting to decide if Avandia is or is not safe and what kind of action needs to be taken.

Dr. Steve Nissen, author of a study which found an increased risk for heart attacks in Avandia patients, had this to say about Avandia’s popularity: “We didn’t have all the information. Even the FDA didn’t have all the information. We made a terrible mistake in approving this drug, and tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people have been harmed.”

Avandia users around the United States will soon find out if the drug they use to treat their Diabetes will be recalled because of these numerous safety concerns.

You may be entitled to financial compensation through an Avandia recall lawsuit if you or someone you love has taken Avandia and suffered from a:

Avandia Lawsuits, GlaxoSmithKline Hid Avandia Heart Attack Data

The popular Diabetes drug Avandia is undergoing a review by a panel of 33 experts who are scheduled to advise the FDA on the risks and problems associated with the drug. New information has become available that Avandia’s maker GlaxoSmithKline knew about the increased heart risks associated with Avandia, but attempted to cover them up.

According to a report by the New York Times, in 1999 GlaxoSmithKline conducted an internal study of Avandia to see how it compared to another Diabetes drug, Actos. The results of this study showed that Avandia posed a higher risk of heart attacks and heart complications than Actos, but GlaxoSmithKline did not release this study and in fact kept the results hidden from public view.

Avandia has now been linked to many dangerous side effects which GlaxoSmithKline tried to hide including:

  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Heart Attack
  • Stroke
  • Sudden Death

One of the most serious potential side effects for user of Avandia is an increased risk of a heart attack. In fact, new medical studies have estimated that people taking Avandia are 33 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack than those taking other Diabetes medications.

Avandia Heart Attack Dangers Hidden From Public, FDA Finds

The Diabetes drug Avandia is on trial today as a panel of outside experts advises the FDA on the risks and problems associated with the drug. New information has become available that not only did Avandia’s maker GlaxoSmithKline seem to ignore the risks associated with Avandia, but they also knew about them and attempted to cover them up.

According to a report by the New York Times, in 1999 GlaxoSmithKline conducted an internal study of Avandia to see how it compared to another popular Diabetes pill, Actos. The results of this study showed that Avandia posed a more significant heart threat and was riskier than Actos.

A GlaxoSmithKline executive wrote of these results in an internal e-mail message dated March 29, 2001, “These data should not see the light of day to anyone outside of GSK.” Comments like these have caused skepticism amongst the 33 panel members about GlaxoSmithKline’s trustworthiness.

Against the company’s wishes, Avandia’s potential to increase the risk of heart attacks and other heart problems was finally made public in May of 2007. In 2007 the FDA responded to the increased risk by adding a warning label to the drug.

This week the FDA must again make a decision about the fate of Avandia. It is expected that the FDA will add more warning labels to Avandia, limit which physicians can prescribe the drug, or recall Avandia completely. The story of Avandia’s past continues to unfold as the committee probes deeper into GlaxoSmithKline’s records.

Two recent studies about the popular Diabetes drug Avandia (Rosiglitazone) manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, suggest that people who take Avandia may be at a higher risk for developing potentially fatal heart problems.

The first study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that people taking Avandia were 33 percent more likely to have an Avandia heart attack than people taking other blood sugar medications.

The second study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine this week, compared patients who were treated with Avandia with those treated with another Diabetes drug, Actos. This study found that patients taking Avandia had an 18% increased risk of heart failure, stroke, and death, compared to those taking Actos.

In response to these findings, the FDA has said that there will likely be a vote by an expert panel on whether or not to recall the drug. They are expected to review Avandia’s safety and whether or not regulatory action is necessary at an upcoming FDA meeting next week.

Steven Nissen, chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic and author of one of the new studies has said, “I can’t understand why doctors would continue to use this drug,” he says, “The number of people harmed here is very large. This is maddening.”
