Recent Settlements & Verdicts

When a propane explosion in a Richland, Iowa home killed seven people and injured eight, Greg McEwen obtained a $20 million settlement after the eight survivors sued the homeowners and various companies in the supply and distribution chain responsible for the propane and the pipeline on the homeowners’ land. The case reportedly is the largest personal injury settlement in Iowa history.

A $9.6 million verdict for two victims of an anhydrous ammonia tank explosion. One plaintiff suffered severe chemical burns and another died when an anhydrous ammonia tank ruptured, spilling 1,500 gallons of the chemical, and then exploded. It was found that there was a failure to warn users about the necessity for periodic inspections and testing of anhydrous ammonia tanks and about the dangers of the chemical. See in news.

Greg McEwen earned a $8.3 million settlement by representing a husband and wife who had complained about a gas smell in their house, but were assured that nothing was wrong. Days before the explosion which killed the husband and burned more than 50% of the wife’s body, the plaintiffs’ gas detectors were set off. One of the defendants told the plaintiffs to unplug the detectors because they were too sensitive. The settlement was reached through arbitration.

Greg McEwen earned a $4.9 million settlement by representing a middle-aged woman who was injured when the weight loss drug she was using was recalled.

When Greg McEwen’s clients’ home exploded, Greg was able to prove that the defendants did not warn them about a defective propane warning system, and he was able to obtain a $3 million settlement.

In several other propane matters involving home explosions and the respective defendants’ failure to warn the plaintiffs about a defective propane warning system, Greg McEwen obtained $1.8 million, $1.7 million, and $1.45 million for his respective clients.

$1.5 million settlement – 2008

When a plaintiff suffered burns on 29% of his body, including 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his face due to a retailer and other defendants’ failure to warn of the defective nature of a propane warning agent, Greg McEwen obtained a $1.25 million settlement for the plaintiff.

A Ford Explorer swerved to avoid a deer, causing the vehicle to roll over. The passenger sustained a spinal injury, rendering him paraplegic. The $1.125 million settlement Greg McEwen obtained provided for the young man’s future care, rehabilitation and security. This is the first lawsuit in Minnesota involving the alleged tendency of Ford Explorers to roll over.

Greg McEwen was able to obtain a $1.049 million recovery for a middle-aged woman due to a recalled drug used for weight loss.

A $1 million settlement was recovered by Greg McEwen for a 78-year-old woman due to a recalled drug.
