August 2010 marked the end of the five year road for DePuy Orthopedics, Inc. ASR Hip Replacement Systems and ASR XL Acetabular System, two of its hip replacement products. The DePuy hip replacement systems have been used in patients all over the world. A shocking amount of patients have experienced problems and the need for a repeat surgery within five years.

MHRA DePuy Hip Recall Alert

Medical Device Alert issued this recall notice in September 2010:

“The manufacturer has informed the MHRA that it is recalling all ASR hip replacement implants. Further background information on this recall is detailed in the manufacturer’s Field Safety Notice dated 24 August 2010. The manufacturer previously issued a Field Safety Notice on 08 March 2010.

The manufacturer has now determined that the revision rate for all devices in the ASR systems at five years is higher than expected across the entire size range and so is recalling all ASR system hip replacement implants. Following consultation with our orthopedic experts we are updating the advice provided in Medical Device Alert (MDA/2010/044) to ensure appropriate follow-up is considered for all patients already implanted with these hip replacement implants.”

If you have received a DePuy ASR hip replacement between 2005 and 2009 and are experiencing pain and problems with your hip, then you may have been implanted with a defective product. It is important that you speak to an experienced DePuy hip recall lawyer about your next plan of action.

DePuy Hip Replacement Lawsuit Timeline

The August 2010 recall follows a series of complications with the DePuy ASR systems. The DePuy ASR replacement systems first hit the United States in 2005. In 2010, DePuy Orthopedics announced that they would be taking their system off the shelves due to declining sales but did not mention anything about the failure rate of the systems. However, in March 2010, the New York Times reported that DePuy issued its first warning to doctors and patients about the high early failure rate. Six months later the official recall came.

In June 2010 the first lawsuit against DePuy Orthopedics was filed, claiming that the DePuy ASR hip replacement was defectively designed, that DePuy knew that there were problems but allowed the manufacturing and distribution to go on anyway. It is expected several more lawsuits will follow in the upcoming months.
