EU Reviews Avandia’s Dangerous Side Effects

In a confidential recommendation to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) UK drug regulators have recommended that GlaxoSmithKline’s popular diabetes drug Avandia, be pulled off the market in the European Union. This recommendation, which is normally kept from the public, was leaked to the BBC and was announced just ahead of a scheduled meeting of experts in Europe to review Avandia’s safety. Later this month the EMA is expected to hear recommendations from regulators in Germany and Sweden regarding their proposals for what should be done about Avandia.
The Commission on Human Medicines, the UK’s medicine regulatory committee, reached the decision that Avandia should be pulled off the market in late July. At about the same time, a panel of experts in the United States made the recommendation to the FDA that Avandia should have a stronger warning label and that doctors should review the risk factors before prescribing Avandia to their patients.
Avandia is under all of this criticism because there have been many studies released over the past several years which show that it increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and heart failure in its users. These findings have lead to lawsuits being filed against the maker of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, on behalf of many people who have been, or whose loved ones have been, negatively affected by these dangerous side effects.

British drug regulators have recommended that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) pull popular diabetes drug Avandia from the market in the European Union. This news comes ahead of a scheduled meeting of experts in Europe to review Avandia’s safety before deciding the fate of the drug in Europe later in September.
The Commission on Human Medicines, the UK’s medicine regulatory committee, reached the decision that Avandia should be pulled off the market in late July. Their recommendation, which is normally confidential, was just recently leaked to the public. Later this month the EMA is expected to hear recommendations from regulators in Germany and Sweden regarding their proposals for what should be done about Avandia.
Regulators in the United States have also been discussing similar issues as several large studies and a recent FDA hearing of experts have shown that Avandia increases risks of heart issues, heart attack, and stroke. All of this news is expected to come as a blow to Avandia’s producer, GlaxoSmithKline, as regulatory committees seem to come ever closer to recalling the drug completely.
