US Senate Avandia Warning – Avandia Lawsuit
May 5, 2010 by US Drug Recall
More and more people are coming forward about the dangerous side effects experienced while on Avandia (Rosiglitazone, GlaxoSmithKline). Recently the US Senate has spoken out about this harmful drug used to treat diabetes in patients. Avandia first hit the markets in 1999 used to treat type II diabetes. Although at first the results of the drug were positive, the FDA now knows that Avandia has been linked to serious side effects including weight gain, liver problems and anemia. However, the most serious side effect of Avandia includes myocardial infarction, or heart attacks.
Avandia Drug Recall
A report by the Senate Finance Committee earlier this year noted that Avandia is associated with 83,000 excess heart attacks occurring between 1999 and 2007. In addition to this, it has been suggested that the makers of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, has been aware of the cardiac risks of the drug for several years but has attempted to keep the risks out of the public eye. It is important that all Americans know there are serious health risks associated with Avandia. According to the Senate Finance Committee’s chair Max Baucus, “GlaxoSmithKline had a responsibility to tell them.”
In addition to the statements mentioned above, the committee also noted that at least two FDA safety investigators recommend Avandia be taken of the market due to the risks associated with cardiac arrest and other heart conditions. Currently Avandia is facing a black box warning for myocardial ischemia and congestive heart failure after a report found the drug increased the risk of myocardial infarction by 43%. Avandia will face another evaluation in July 2010 to determine the future of this drug.
However, what about those affected by Avandia before 1999 and 2007? Didn’t they have a right to know this information before they chose to take the product? We think so. If you were taken Avandia before May 2007 and suffered from heart attack or other heart conditions, we can help you get the compensation you deserve for this neglect and suffering.
Speak Up Against Avandia
Regardless of the future of Avandia, however, the issue of being left in the dark remains. As reported by Dr. Bergenstal ADA president for medicine and science, “the real problem here is inadequate data, which leads to varying interpretation and opinions. If we need more data, which we do, the FDA needs to insist on cooperation from all the parties.” It is because of the lack of information given by GlaxoSmithKline that close to 100,000 cases of myocardial infarction have been reported and many thousands of others have suffered in silence.
